Digital marketing tips

5 ways to improve your marketing knowledge during lockdown.

It’s the start of a new year, 2021, which means for many people it’s time to start working on those new year’s resolutions. Did you know that last year Strava reported that most people in England would have given up their new year’s resolutions by Quitters Day – 19th January. This year it seems easier to give up our new year’s resolutions already rather than trying to achieve them, as we’re currently in lockdown number 3. Have you given up on your new year’s resolution yet? I hope the answer is no, and if your resolution happens to be improving your marketing knowledge, I can shed some light on how you can achieve this without having to move from your sofa!

1. Listen to Marketing Podcasts

Many people aren’t aware that there are loads of really helpful podcasts which can improve their marketing knowledge as they’re easy to access and listen too; there is a variety of podcasts out there relating to marketing, ranging in topics and times. The reason I enjoy listening to marketing podcasts so much is they always leave me inspired and motivated! There are no excuses why you can’t listen to them, they’re available on a range of platforms, and podcasts are portable so you could listen to one whilst on a walk, in a bath or when you’re cooking!

Here are some of my top marketing podcasts I’d recommend to you: Marketing Over Coffee, The Digital Marketing Podcast, Marketing School

2. Read marketing books

Reading a book about marketing is an alternative to listening to podcasts if you’re someone that is a visual learner. The luxury with reading a book is you can do it at your own pace, anytime; as it’s in black and white you can easily refer to key points, written by industry experts in detail. The only downside is depending on when a book was published, this may not be the best method to keep up to date on the latest marketing trends.

Here are a few books our digital marketing tutors would recommend: This is Marketing by Seth Godin, Social Media Made Simple by Mary Thomas, Guerrilla Marketing by Levinson & Levinson

3. Google Digital Garage

Completing the Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, an online course by Google, will give you an overview of digital marketing. Once you have completed 26 modules which include creating a plan for your online business strategy, social media, email, analytics, and a 40-question exam, you’ll gain a certificate that is widely recognized and can be directly uploaded onto your LinkedIn. It’s self-paced learning and did I mention it’s a free course with 40 hours’ worth of learning!

4. LinkedIn Learning

If there is a particular area in marketing, you’d like to improve your knowledge and skills in, LinkedIn learning is where it’s at! Similar to Google Digital Garage, offering online courses, they go one step further by offering new and relevant courses in specific areas/topics – e.g. Become a Marketing Manager, Writing a Marketing Plan. However, although you get a one-month free trial, some users have said because of the large number of courses they offer they’re only scraping the surface with the technical content the courses provide.

5. Digital marketing upskill course

If you’d like something a little more in-depth and long term, why not try our 12-15 month digital marketing upskill course. This course is great for individuals who already have a role in marketing but want to update their marketing skills and knowledge. You’ll have your very own industry experts aka our digital marketing tutors who will mentor and train you, whether that is online or face to face. It’s a great way to network, as you’ll be in a cohort with individuals in a very similar position to you. Once you’ve completed our course you’ll come out with a highly recognized qualification and new marketing knowledge and skills which can be implemented into your everyday duties and tasks.
