My apprenticeship as someone with dyslexia

We sat down with Verity, an apprentice with Dyslexia that’s been studying a Business Administration Apprenticeship at Latchams. Here’s what she had to say about her experience:

How did you feel applying for an Apprenticeship when having additional learning difficulties?

When I applied for an Apprenticeship with Professional Apprenticeships, I was a bit concerned as I am dyslexic, and I wasn’t sure if I would get any additional support which made me a bit concerned and worried when applying, as in my previous school and college I wasn’t able to get the help and support I wanted.

How were you supported through the enrolment process of becoming an apprentice?

I was supported very well through the enrolment process. They assured me that I would get extra support during my apprenticeship for example extra time in completing my work, and I would get extra time in my EPA. This made me feel very pleased that they would allow me to do this, it was a massive relief!

How was the first 3 months of your Apprenticeship including Induction?

The first 3 months of my apprenticeship ran smoothly as I started when it was COVID!! My Tutor Yasin was brilliant with everything going on in the world! He was still able to contact me Via Teams and have regular meetings, about what I am expected to do in my apprenticeship.

How did your tutor support you throughout your Apprenticeship?

My Tutor Yasin was amazing!! He supported me by allowing me extra time completing my work, he also reassured me not to rush and the deadlines were just in place for me to work towards. This made me feel very comfortable and this reassured me not to rush my work, as I take longer to answer questions and read back through my work, so I was very grateful how Yasin was very patient with me, and any questions I needed help with his response was very quick, and he took his time explaining all the questions to me in detail, so I would get a better understanding on what is being said.

How were you supported in preparation for EPA?

Yasin Prepared an EPA Plan for me and mapped out all the areas linking to my coursework, so I was able to answer any questions quickly and efficiently. I found this really helpful as it was a clear guide with all the questions I could have been asked, with my coursework numbered so I could decide what to evidence it back to.

What have you progressed onto since your Apprenticeship?

I have now progressed onto a Level 4 Business Administration course, which I have nearly completed, I chose to do this as I wanted to further my knowledge and learn more about business administration. I am currently deciding what to do after I have completed my Level 4 NVQ.

How has this experience encouraged you to continue with Further Education / Career Goals?

The apprenticeship encouraged me to further my education by continuing to progress to do level 4 Business Administration NVQ. Because I was interested in learning more about the business industry and getting a clear idea of what I wanted to do in my career.

What would you say to anyone considering an Apprenticeship with any learning difficulties?

I would say to anyone looking to apply for an apprenticeship with learning difficulties, that it’s the best option to kick start your career!! As you are learning on the job and also getting a qualification at the same time, you can progress in your job role once you have finished your apprenticeship. The amount of support you receive inside of work to help you with your coursework and job role is amazing. Everyone is so willing to help out and see you succeed and do well for your future career.
